April Preschool Themes & Ideas

April is a month full of fun and exciting themes for preschoolers to learn and explore. From springtime and Easter to Earth Day and National Poetry Month, there are plenty of opportunities for children to engage in hands-on activities that promote creativity, imagination, and learning. Let's dive into some of the most popular preschool themes in April and discover how they can inspire young minds

Spring

April is the perfect time to celebrate spring with your preschoolers. You can teach them about different types of flowers, plants, and bugs that come out during this season. You can also incorporate activities like planting seeds, going on nature walks, and creating spring-themed artwork.

Birds

One of the first signs of spring is hearing the birds chirp! April is a great time to observe and learn about birds. Your preschoolers will love learning about all the different types of birds and being able to identify them. From backyard bird watching to making your own bird seed writing tray, this theme is packed with tons of fun.
After you have read books and done a few activities to help your preschoolers identify types of birds, make a bird feeder. This is an activity that your preschoolers won't need much help with, making it great for building independence! Once complete they will LOVE hanging these outside your classroom or home to see the birds eat the seed.

Earth Day and Recycling

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. This is a day where we celebrate, honor, and participate in activities that encourage people to take care of Earth. This is a great day to get outdoors with your preschoolers. You can do activities like recycling projects, creating art with natural materials, and talking about ways to reduce waste Don't forget to grab thisfreebie to celebrate this important holiday! Watching recycling in action is a fantastic experience! Recycling and garbage trucks are always a hit among our little learners, imagine their reactions when they get to see them at work! Take a trip to a local plant or set up your own recycling center in the classroom. Get families involved by asking them to bring in recyclables to add to the dramatic play invitation and for learning activities.

Easter

Many families celebrate Easter in April, so it's a popular preschool theme. You can do activities like making Easter baskets, doing egg hunts. Some fun activities include: create a plastic egg filled sensory bin to see if the eggs sink or float or microwaving a peep to see what happens! Our Easter theme is filled with a collection of engaging activities!
An Easter theme allows for another opportunity to paint with non-traditional items, like stamping with plastic Easter eggs!

National Pet Day

April 11th is National Pet Day, and while pet owners celebrate their animals every day, it is a day to give them some extra love! This holiday is a great time to read about the different animals you can have as pets and an opportunity for your preschoolers to bring in a picture of their own furry, or not-so furry, friends!
Whether you have a dog, cat, bunny, or fish....pets are part of the family and they deserve to be celebrated. A pet theme allows students to learn all about all kinds of different pets and about what pets their peers have.
When learning about pets, don't forget to talk about veterinarians! Arrange a field trip to your local veterinarian or set up a pretend play pet clinic in your space.

Month of Military Child

April is designated to honor the many sacrifices made by military families all over the world. This month places a special honor of those children whose parents served or are serving in the military. This is an excellent time to talk with your preschoolers about military families. Month of the Young Child

Last but certainly not least, April is designated as Month of the Young Child!
