April Preschool Themes & Ideas

April is here! The birds are chirping, the weather is warmer, and it officially feels like spring. There are so many great themes to incorporate in your preschool curriculum in April. weather, Easter, birds, growing fruits & vegetables in the garden, and Earth Day, allow for so many great activities and hands-on learning opportunities. Below you will find engaging ideas to support preschool skill development in April!

Birds 

One of the first signs of spring is hearing the birds chirp! April is a great time to observe and learn about birds. Your preschoolers will love learning about all the different types of birds and being able to identify them. From backyard bird watching to making your own bird seed writing tray, this theme is packed with tons of fun.

Make Your Own Bird Feeder 

After you have read books and done a few activities to help your preschoolers identify types of birds, make a bird feeder. This is an activity that your preschoolers won't need much help with, making it great for building independence! Once complete they will LOVE hanging these outside your classroom or home to see the birds eat the seed.

Earth Day and Recycling 

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd. This is a day where we celebrate, honor, and participate in activities that encourage people to take care of Earth. This is a great day to get outdoors with your preschoolers. Don't forget to grab thisfreebie to celebrate this important holiday! Take a Trip to a Recycling Plant

Watching recycling in action is a fantastic experience! Recycling and garbage trucks are always a hit among our little learners, imagine their reactions when they get to see them at work! Take a trip to a local plant or set up your own recycling center in the classroom. Get families involved by asking them to bring in recyclables to add to the dramatic play invitation and for learning activities.

Easter

Easter is a time for egg hunts, bunnies, and everyone's not so favorite treat- peeps! All jokes aside, Easter allows for a great addition to your springtime curriculum. Create a plastic egg filled sensory bin to see if the eggs sink or float or try microwaving a peep to see what happens! Our Easter theme is filled with a collection of engaging activities!

National Pet Day 

​April 11th is National Pet Day, and while pet owners celebrate their animals every day, it is a day to give them some extra love! This holiday is a great time to read about the different animals you can have as pets and an opportunity for your preschoolers to bring in a picture of their own furry, or not-so furry, friends! 

Pet's

Whether you have a dog, cat, bunny, or fish....pets are part of the family and they deserve to be celebrated. A pet theme allows students to learn all about all kinds of different pets and about what pets their peers have. 

Taking care of pets

When learning about pets, don't forget to talk about veterinarians! Arrange a field trip to your local veterinarian or set up a pretend play pet clinic in your space.

Make Your Own Dog Bones 

Celebrate pets by making your owndog treats! While not all students have dogs, this is a great activity to practice measurement and following directions. Treats can be sent home with those that have dogs or donated to an animal shelter.

Pond Animals 

A pond theme is always a classroom favorite and perfect to celebrate in the spring. We finally see more animals, bugs, and our favorite pond friends. Jump into this theme with super engaging and hands-on activities!

National Frog Month

Speaking of our pond friends, April is National Frog Month! Spend this month teaching your preschoolers about these cute creatures, and don't forget to have them practicing their best ribbit ribbit. We have an entire packet dedicated to frog science, and let me tell you...there is a lot to learn!

Month of Military Child

April is designated to honor the many sacrifices made by military families all over the world. This month places a special honor of those children whose parents served or are serving in the military. This is an excellent time to talk with your preschoolers about military families. Month of the Young Child

Last but certainly not least, April is designated as Month of the Young Child!
This is a great time to reach out to the professional early childhood organizations in your community to volunteer and find resources to share with your clients.
Also be on the lookout for activities happening in the community to celebrate this occasion.
