Spring is in the air! That means so are our favorite flying friends, birds. Spring is the perfect time to plan some fun and engaging activities centered around birds. A bird seed writing tray is a great way to celebrate spring while encouraging writing skills for your preschool students.

Below I have shared a tutorial on setting up your own bird seed writing tray- the perfect addition to your bird theme. Writing trays are one of the most natural ways to expose your preschoolers to writing while encouraging fine motor skills. It's not only fun for them to feel different textures, it's a tactile strategy to help preschoolers learn letter formations.

Materials:

• Bird Seed
• Tray i.e cookie sheet, writing tray, or a shallow bin
• Bird letter cards  *Optional
  
• Add in plastic bird toys and bird's nest *Optional

Gather your materials, and prepare the writing tray. The best part about writing trays is they are completely customizable for the needs of your preschoolers. Make sure when pouring the birdseed into the tray, you make it shallow enough so they can trace with their fingers.

Teacher tip: writing trays can also be used with paintbrushes, pencils, or sticks.

After you add the birdseed, place the letter cards visible to your preschoolers. Then, encourage preschoolers to flip through the cards and practice writing the letters.

Teacher tip: writing trays can be an activity that is available every day of your bird theme, which means you can spread out the letters throughout the week. This will allow preschools to focus on individual letters slowly rather than rushing through the entire alphabet.
