Create a Pretend Play Recycling Center and Repair Clinic
Preschoolers love to learn about the world around them and the people in their community. We can teach our preschoolers about recycling, sanitation workers, and the importance of taking care of the Earth. With Earth Day right around the corner, it's a great time to teach children about the importance of recycling by transforming your dramatic play space into a recycling center. You can create your own recycling center by gathering a variety of recyclable materials. Be sure to spread the word to your clients that you are looking for these items-chances are they have some they can donate! We've also included printables to create a Repair Clinic Dramatic Play invitation. Learning that items can be repaired and the basic process is another way to be earth friendly.
You can include items such as: Yogurt cups, empty water bottles. cereal boxes, egg carton, magazines etc.
Set up bins or boxes for recycling. Label each on for sorting: Paper, Plastic, Metal, and Glass. Take some time to talk to the children, and Read books about Recycling and Redemption.
Many states have programs where they purchase recyclable items. Provide the children with a cash register so that they can pay their customers for returns.
This Pretend Recycling Center was created using printables from my Recycling Center Dramatic Play pack. These packs make it easy for you to print and set up your pretend play space.
Kids love to sort real items. A kitchen scale is another great item to add your space. You can talk about the size, shape, and weight of different items.
This dramatic play recycling set includes a variety of print rich materials including several leveled receipts. There is so much work to do at the recycling center! You can use the included job cards, and posters to help young children learn more about the different jobs at the center.
At the end of the week you can take a field trip to drop of your dramatic play recyclables-or place them in your recycling can for pick up. The Children will enjoy watching them being picked up on garbage day!
