Weather in a Jar
Cloud in a Jar
Have you ever wanted to "catch" a cloud? With this fun experiment your students will be able to observe how clouds (and fog) are formed.
Supplies Needed: Clear glass jar with lid ⅓ cup hot water Ice Hairspray, aerosol works best Pour the hot water into the jar, swirling it around to warm the sides of the jar Place the lid upside down on top of the jar Fill the lid with ice and let rest for 20-30 seconds Once you see condensation forming, remove the lid and spray the hairspray inside the jar Replace the lid upside down with the ice still in it Watch the cloud form inside the jar Once the cloud has built up, remove the lid and watch the cloud rise from the jar Make note of your observations throughout the experiment. |
Rain Cloud in a Jar
Sheena W. of Building Blocks Preschool shared this photo of a raining cloud in a jar. Fill the jar about halfway with water, then top off with shaving cream. Provide liquid water colors in blue (or any other colors desired). Encourage children to use an eye dropper to drop the liquid watercolor on top of the shaving cream. Children can observe the watercolors dripping through the shaving cream and into the water at the bottom of the jar.

Tornado in Bottle
Your students will love observing a tornado in a bottle! You can make one, by purchasing this connector, or by making your own.
If you want to make your own, you'll need a large clear tall bottle (VOSS bottles work great, or something similar to these). Next, add a squirt of dish soap, and food coloring/glitter if you are desire. Now you are ready! Close the lid, and rapidly move the bottle in a circular motion, until the tornado forms. The tornado you are observing in your bottle is caused by the water in the bottle spinning towards the center of the bottle, or vortex. This activity demonstrates "centripetal force" – which is a force moving in a circular path that acts on a liquid/object and pulls it inward, towards the center of it's path. |
Wind Exploration
Set up a wind exploration station outside. Add windsocks, wind chimes and windmills for children to observe. As an alternative, if you don't have any wind, you can use straws or a small handheld fan.
