October Preschool Themes and Ideas

October is one of the most exciting times of year in the preschool classroom! With so many seasonal changes, holidays, and hands-on opportunities, it’s the perfect month to lean into theme-based learning that’s playful, meaningful, and developmentally appropriate.

Fire Safety

October is Fire Safety Month. It's a great time to plan a fire drill, and practice what to do in the event of a fire.  

Activities to Try:

• Practice “Stop, Drop & Roll”
• Set up a Fire Station Dramatic Play Center. Our Reader Vicki shared her amazing set up for Fire Safety week-so much fun!
• Fire Safety Inspired Arts and Crafts Jodi N. of the Apple Blossom Childcare & Preschool shared her 9-1-1 resist craft with our group. What a great activity for Fire Safety Week! Jodi says she used regular tempera paint thinned with water to make a consistency thicker than regular water colors but considerably thinner than tempera paint. Also she said that a generic brand crayon is more waxy and works much better than a name brand one.
• Sherry W. of First Friends Family Childcare shared these process art fire paintings
  that the children in her care created by mixing red and yellow paint.
• Create paper plate firefighter trucks

Nocturnal Animals

Your students will love learning about the animals that are wide awake while they are sleeping. From Bats, to Owls there are so many to explore. Nature Craft

Spiders

Spiders are so interesting! You students will love learning about these amazing arachnids and what makes them unique. Combine these spider activities, with your favorite spider books! Learn more about shapes with this free spider activity! 

Spider Fine Motor Fun

Member Jess T. combined our 10-frame spider counting mats with a yarn web, plastic spiders, and tweezers to create a fun math activity that builds fine motor skills at the same time!

Pumpkins

Pumpkins everywhere! There is so much to learn about pumpkins! You can read about them, carve them to investigate what's inside, weigh them, measure them, test them if they sink or float, and make your own! You can take a trip to a local pumpkin patch or set up your own! Be sure to sample them-yummm pumpkin pie!

Halloween

There are so many fun activities you can do for Halloween! Here are some fun Halloween books you might want to add to your collection. During this theme you can explore: Jack-O-Lanterns, Costumes, Trick-or-Treat Safety, as well as explore what is real vs. not real.

Explore Skeletons

For Halloween week you can also explore skeletons! Michelle J. of Making Memories Childcare Centre shared this super X-ray craft that the children in her care worked on. She traced their body part and they glued on q-tip "bones". She also provided them with "real X-rays" ! You can also try your hand your hand at making this free life sized skeleton craft!
