This set of spider web shape puzzles is the perfect activity to pair with the book Walter's Wonderful Web, by Tim Hopgood.
Walter's Wonderful Web creates a wonderful opportunity for talking about shape names and attributes. The free printable activity has little spiders in the same shape as each web. Younger preschoolers will enjoy matching the spider to the web of the same shape. Older preschoolers can begin to sound out the shape words and match them to the webs.
Keep the book handy during this activity for reference! Children can match the shape webs to those in the book.
**Teacher Tip: This is a great opportunity to talk about shape attributes! The shapes in the book are made from a web and not "perfect shapes", this creates a great opportunity to talk about the features that make up each shape!
Talking about lines and curves is also important for pre-writing and reading.
Preschoolers love seek-and-find style games!
Another great way to use this activity to practice pre-reading skills is to match the spider word cards to the words in the book.
**For younger preschoolers be sure to only set out the shape words that are contained in the book to reduce frustration. Older preschoolers can benefit from sorting through the word cards to find the correct one.
