This Santa sleigh writing tray is perfect to incorporate during a Deck the Halls or Santa and His Helpers theme. It’s a simple and fun way for preschoolers to work on pre-writing skills with a bit of salt and a Santa’s magical sleigh.
*For Santa's sleigh, you could use a small ornanament or any other miniature sleigh you find or have on hand.
Layer the tray with a small amount of salt. Enough to make an even layer.
Invite preschoolers to first practice using their fingers to write in the salt and then demonstrate how to move the sleigh through the salt to create letters.
Preschoolers will glide the slide through the salt to create letters. To differentiate this activity, you can allow preschoolers to practice with lines, squiggles, and shapes before asking them to write specific letters.
Writing trays allow preschoolers to practice pre-writing skills in a way that creates excitement. Preschoolers don’t always want to practice tracing letters but with a writing tray there is no hesitation.
Giving preschoolers an opportunity to strengthen their finger grasp and fine-motor skills are critical steps in preparing preschoolers to hold writing utensils and develop the necessary skills needed for the progression of writing. Writing trays are easy to create and can be used in a variety of ways.
