Winter Weather, Snowflakes & Snowmen

Winter weather can be very unpredictable from snow, and blizzards ice storms. There might even be a rare warm day. It's a great time to explore how different parts of the world have different winter weather. Explore the changes in weather that come with winter. Create simple weather charts to track temperature and precipitation, engage in experiments to understand freezing and melting, and discuss how animals adapt to winter conditions. This topic combines science, math, and critical thinking. Set up a Meteorology/News Station Dramatic Play Center.
Children love observing and exploring weather. Use this time to introduce:

Winter Clothes & Staying Warm

This is a great theme for teaching independence, vocabulary, and classification.

The weather is starting to get chilly and in lots of places it will start to snow. It's important to teach your students about how we can stay warm during those colder months. Exploring different types of clothing is a great way to talk about cold weather with our students.

Introduce your preschooler to some new winter vocabulary related to winter clothes, and accessories. This season it will be important to know about hats, gloves, winter boots, and scarfs. What other items do your students need to stay warm?

Cold Weather Animals

There are so many fun animals that we get to teach preschoolers about but some of my favorite include cold weather animals. Winter is the perfect time to explore arctic animals like walrus, caribou and polar bears.

This is also a great season to explore-penguins! Just remember Penguins and Arctic Animals, like Polar Bears do not live together and not all penguins are cold weather animals!
