Snow & Snowman Dramatic Play Ideas

Add a variety of winter weather dress up items (mittens, scarves, etc.) to your dramatic play space as well as pretend snowballs.

Build a Snowman

This clever space below, belongs to community member Amy McMonagle of BuggaBee & Me Daycare.
Amy sewed these large snowballs from felt. After the children have stacked their snowman, they can embellish him with snowman features that attach with velcro.

*Shoveling Snow

Set up an invitation to shovel snow indoors. Place cotton balls, balled up socks, or pretend snowballs all over the floor. Then invite children to scoop up with a shovel.

Weighing snow

Take a scale and some buckets outside to weigh snow! After the first couple buckets encourage children to guess how much each bucket of snow will weigh. This could also be done in a sensory bin with a balance scale. 

Preschoolers can practice measuring with non-standard forms of measurement with this fun snow tracks measuring activity included in the Winter Measure, Graph, and Compare pack.

Snow Volcano

Create a volcano in the snow!
Materials:
  • Snow
  • Vinegar
  • Dish soap
  • Baking Soda
  • Plastic Cup
  • Red food coloring
Procedure:
Help your preschoolers build a mound of snow. Make a well in the center at the top of volcano, big enough to fit the cup in. Fill the cup about halfway with baking soda and place inside the top of the volcano.
Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar with the food coloring and a few drops of dish soap in a small container that the children can handle.
Once the vinegar mixture is ready it's time to pour it into the volcano and watch the magic happen!
