Make Your Own Winter Scarf
Try inviting your preschooler to make their very own special scarf to wear on those cold days, we have all the information you need for this DIY project.
Whether you are learning all about snow and snowmen, discovering the animals who live in the Arctic, or gathering all the ways to stay warm with a winter clothes theme, all of these themes have one thing in common...cold weather! Making their own winter scarf allows preschoolers to practice creativity and self-expression through a fun DIY winter craft. We've provided simple instructions that you can follow along with below.
*We explored with different types of materials, non-fraying fleece is a great option. Head to your local fabric store and grab a few different pieces that are on sale.
Keep in mind that smocks for preschoolers would be a great choice because fabric markers aren't very washable!
Begin by preparing the fabric to make your winter scarves. The length you cut your scarf depends on how you will be using it, these would be fun for making for stuffed friends and dolls too! I highly recommend having these pieces cut before inviting preschoolers to join in.
If you want to add any fringe or design to the bottom of the scarves, I would complete this step directly after. Use safety scissors and have preschoolers practice cutting. This might be an entirely new-cutting experience for them.
Ask them how it feels different than paper. Is it more difficult to cut?
Invite preschoolers to design with fabric markers. For many, it will be a new experience as drawing on clothes is usually off-limits. They can explore with as many colors or designs as they'd like.
During your Winter Clothes theme, invite preschoolers to become fashion designers to make scarves to "sell" during a Department Store dramatic play set-up. It's an excellent way to extend this craft tutorial and encourage preschoolers to think creatively with their designing skills!
Preschoolers will be excited to wear and show off their homemade winter scarves. These also make a great addition to your dramatic play centers for the winter months!
