Topics and Vocabulary to Teach Preschoolers About Halloween

Celebrating Halloween with preschoolers is always so much fun, their eyes light up with excitement! It's a time where we get to mix learning with loads of creativity. With Halloween-themed lessons, we dive into a world of colors, shapes, and make-believe adventures! We get to craft spooky art, count candy corn, and chat about friendly Halloween buddies. It's a season that's all about fun, learning, and tons of happiness.

Benefits of Halloween Learning for Preschoolers

A  Halloween theme with preschoolers goes way beyond just spooky fun – it's a fantastic way to nurture their cognitive, emotional, and social development. When we dive into the world of Halloween, we're not only sparking their imagination, we're helping them learn and grow in so many ways. On the cognitive side, we're encouraging critical thinking as they consider the different costumes, shapes, and colors. Emotionally, it's a safe space to explore feelings – from excitement to mild spookiness – and learn how to manage them. Socially, it's all about sharing stories, collaborating on crafts, and bonding over the magic of Halloween. Halloween is not just about candy; it's a great opportunity to learn about the history of this celebration while having fun.

Teaching Preschoolers about Halloween

Halloween is a beloved theme here at Pre-K Printable Fun. We have created a large library of Preschool Halloween Activities that preschoolers are sure to love!
Our Halloween Theme Planning Map is a great tool for launching your activity plan for this theme!
Throughout our site you will find a plethora of
Halloween Preschool activities on our theme planning page as well as resources that work on essential skills and build vocabulary.
There are so many great Halloween books so we’ve highlighted some of our favorites!

If your school allows it, plan a trick-or-treat around the school or a trunk or treat with families to foster the collaboration between home and school!

Engaging Halloween Topics for Preschoolers

Halloween is filled with so many spooky characters, symbols, and elements. You can begin your Halloween unit by breaking down the different aspects of Halloween!

 Symbols of Halloween

  • When it comes to Halloween with preschoolers start by brainstorming some of the symbols associated with Halloween. like pumpkins, bats, witches, and ghosts.
  • To make the learning experience even more engaging, bring out visuals like colorful illustrations and playful crafts that let them explore these symbols in a hands-on way.
  • Through discussions, encourage preschoolers to ask questions, share their thoughts, and even come up with their own imaginative stories about these Halloween favorites. Make a bat craft or a creepy skeleton!

Halloween Colors

  • Start by asking your preschoolers if they know the colors associated with Halloween, I bet they do!
  • Try an art project like a dot marker candy corn that teaches your preschoolers all about using color patterning in art.

Halloween Costumes

  • Encourage your students to share what they are going to be for Halloween
  • Talk about different types of Halloween costumes
  • You can extend the learning about costumes by including a Costume Shop Dramatic Play center.
  • Discuss the importance of costumes being pretend, especially for those students who might have fears related to dressing up.

Trick-or-Treating

  • Introduce the concept of trick-or-treating and talk about the rules and safety that preschoolers need to remember. (Don't eat unwrapped candy, stay with parents, never go off alone, stay in well lit areas). Try this safe and not safe sorting activity.
  • Use the concept of trick-or-treating as a way to practice counting! Remind preschoolers they can count their own candy at home.
  • Play a trick-or-treating game as practice!

 Essential Halloween Vocabulary for Preschoolers

There are a lot of words associated with Halloween and some of these words might be knew to your preschooler. During your circle-time use an anchor chart to have preschoolers list the words that they do know are associated with Halloween.

Spooky

  • Talk to your preschoolers about what spooky means and how the term is used for things that are a little scary but in a fun way!
  • Allow your preschoolers to talk about strategies to help them if they find things to be too spooky.
  • Include a spooky craft such as a bat cave or Halloween slime!
  • Show preschoolers spooky items such as spider rings, eyeballs, and vampire teeth.

Jack-O'-Lantern

  • Show preschoolers what a jack-o-lantern is, then provide them with pictures to sort between pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns.
  • Create your own jack-o-lanterns with a painted pumpkin activity

Ghouls and Goblins

  • These are two words that your preschoolers might be unfamiliar with. Begin by introducing these fun and imaginary creatures associated with Halloween as friendly and not-so-scary beings.
  • Encourage your preschoolers to get creative by crafting and drawing their own versions of ghouls and goblins.

Candy Corn

  • Talk about how candy corn is a common candy for Halloween.
  • Bring candy corn in and let your preschoolers try it for themselves!
  • Use this as an opportunity to teach preschoolers about patterns by encouraging them to draw their own candy corn.
  • Include candy corn into math activities with counting and sorting.
  • Do a science experiment to show your preschoolers the layering of colors.

Fun and Interactive Halloween Activities

One of the best parts about Halloween is all of the creative and hands-on art projects and activities there are for preschoolers to complete!

Spider Web Craft

  • Creating spider webs using yarn and paper plates. This activity is great for enhancing fine motor skills and creativity.
  • Using a bag of fake spiderwebs, put little plastic spider rings inside and have preschoolers use tongs to remove them from the web.
  • Make a spider web with glue and salt, then paint it with watercolors. These turn out really neat.

Ghostly Math

  • Using little ghost counters, erasers or stickers, have preschoolers count or graph! This is an excellent opportunity to turn Halloween fun into learning math.
  • Match colored ghost with same color treats using our printable Gobble Ghosts game from our Halloween Preschool Activity Pack.

Mummy Wrap

  • What could be more fun than wrapping each other up like mummies! Have your preschoolers use toilet paper to wrap one another.
  • A mummy wrap activity is great for team-building and gross motor work.
  • Cut out a mummy on black construction paper and use tape to decorate his body.

Tips for Teaching Halloween Concepts to Preschoolers

  • Keep it age-appropriate: Tailor your lessons and activities to the preschoolers' developmental level, ensuring they are not too frightening or complex.
  • Use visuals: Incorporate colorful and engaging visuals like pictures, illustrations, and props to help convey Halloween concepts effectively.
  • Hands-on activities: Encourage hands-on activities such as pumpkin carving, crafting, and dress-up to make learning fun and memorable.
  • Storytelling: Share age-appropriate Halloween stories and legends that introduce them to the holiday's traditions and characters.
  • Friendly approach: Emphasize the friendly and imaginative aspects of Halloween, reassuring preschoolers that it's all in good fun.
  • Themed arts and crafts: Plan art projects that involve creating Halloween-themed decorations or crafts, fostering creativity and fine motor skills.
  • Group discussions: Encourage group discussions where preschoolers can share their thoughts, feelings, and ideas about Halloween concepts.
  • Simple vocabulary: Introduce and repeat key Halloween vocabulary words in a playful and engaging manner.
  • Safety reminders: Teach safety tips for trick-or-treating, such as staying close to adults and looking both ways before crossing streets.
  • Celebrate diversity: Acknowledge and respect the cultural diversity within your group, discussing how different people celebrate Halloween or similar holidays. Be sure to include a discussion about those that choose not to celebrate at all.
  • Incorporate music and songs: Use Halloween-themed songs and rhymes to add a musical and rhythmic element to your lessons.
  • Be patient and flexible: Preschoolers may have different comfort levels with Halloween concepts, so be patient and adapt your teaching approach as needed to make learning enjoyable for all.

Share Your Halloween Adventures

The most important aspect of celebrating Halloween with preschoolers is having fun! Wrap up your unit by allowing your preschoolers to share about their experiences with Halloween.
