Clown Shoe Lacing Card Preschool Fine Motor Activity

From clowns to cotton candy to circus games there are so many fun activities you can include during a preschool circus unit. But, this activity is one that takes the cake! Creating a a clown shoe lacing card is a fun and interactive activity for preschoolers. Lacing cards support fine motor development, hand-eye coordination, and concentration. Follow along for a step-by-step guide to making a clown shoe lacing card using cardboard.

We love to explore activities that are low-cost and that preschoolers can engage with every step of the way! Each clown shoe is unique to each student and it includes an added bonus of lacing practice, a great skill for enhancing fine motor muscles.

What You'll Need:

Cardboard or poster board
Clown shoe template
Pencil
Glue stick
Scissors
Shoe laces, yarn, or craft rope
Glitter glue for decorating
Hole punch

*Teacher tip: a heavy duty cardstock would also work for this activity!

Directions:

You'll start by using the clown shoe template to trace onto your paper. Preschoolers often like to help with this step which sometimes it can be difficult for them to do so you can give them their own paper to "practice."

After you have cut out the template you will use the hole punch to make the eyes of the shoe along the top portion of the shoe. Hole punchers are an excellent tool for fine motor practice for preschoolers, this is a step that they can assist you with!

Next, demonstrate the lacing by showing the preschoolers how to thread the yarn or shoelace through one of the holes. Guide them on how to move the lace in and out of the holes, following the outline of the shoe.

After you and your preschooler have laced the entire shoe then the fun part begins...decorating! Provide your preschoolers with stickers, markers, gems, or whatever you have in your craft bin that you want to bring out.

You can print out pictures of clown shoes so preschoolers can see how vibrant and different each clown's shoes really are!

This is a fun and creative way to make something that your preschooler can hold onto and use to practice lacing and to learn to tie their shoes.
