Preschool Fine Motor Snake Activity
This preschool activity combines snakes with fine motor fun for an engaging learning experience preschoolers will ask to do again and again. Preschoolers love anything that slithers, creeps, and crawls including snakes. Learning all about snakes is a great way to engage preschoolers while meeting a variety of learning objectives. If you throw bubble wrap and snakes into one activity, you will have some very excited preschoolers. Now is the perfect time to put that extra bubble wrap to use and make a slithering snake with this simple and easy tutorial.
This project requires a few simple supplies and it's excellent practice for strengthening fine-motor skills.
Teacher tip: Let your preschoolers practice cutting lines and curves on paper first before moving to the bubble wrap. The extra practice will get them prepared for cutting out a coiled snake.
Time to Create Bubblesnakes!
Lay the bubble wrap flat and begin cutting into a coiled pattern. This is a great time to support preschoolers with proper scissor handling. Students could also draw the lines on the bubble wrap in advance to plan the shape of their snake.
*Teacher Tip: For students having trouble remembering proper grip try drawing a smiley face on their thumbnail, they should always see the smiley face when cutting.
Continue cutting and looping around. This might be difficult for preschoolers to manipulate and maneuver, fortunately the resulting shape doesn't matter and this is excellent practice for scissor control.
Finish by adding some googly eyes for fun.
Engaging in this activity supports fine motor skills, proper scissor handling, and a dash of creativity. The snake can be any size or shape!
Wait, the fine motor fun isn't done! Last, but certainly not least...time to pop those bubbles! Popping those little bubbles is great for finger strength (hello pre-writing skills!) and great for hand-eye coordination.
