Have the child make a self portrait. Compare from beginning to end of the year, or try a monthly self portrait.

Foil Mirrors
Create a mirror. Cut out mirror shape from cardboard. Attach Oval Foil Mirror to cardboard with glue and decorate with stickers or jewels.

Personalized Grass HeadTake a zoomed in photo of your student (if possible avoid photographing the top of their hair-bangs are ok). Cut the top of the image flat. Laminate for extra durability. Attach the image onto a plastic cup using double sided tape, add holes for drainage. Place a second cup on the outside to protect the image, and to allow room for drainage. Fill with potting soil and grass seeds. Have your student take care of their grass by watering it, clipping the "hair". Keep it in a sunny spot, and drain often.

All About Me Book
Invite children to create a book all about themselves!
For each book you will need a piece of colored paper and several sheets of white paper, fold them all in half with the colored paper on the outside of the fold, then staple at the folded edge to hold them together. Alternatively you can purchase blank books.
For this book children can use a combination of drawings and photos.
Encourage children to write about their favorite toys, people in their family, favorite colors, foods, friends, and activities.
Include a space for children to write their name (even if they are in the scribbling stage) for reference at the end of the year. Children not yet writing can dictate to an adult to add descriptions to the images.
During group time invite children to share a few pages from their book.

Characteristic Graphing
Do a graphing activity based on characteristics like hair color, eye color, color shirt you are wearing that day. This can be done at home with friends and family members too.
Measuring with My Hands
Create a measuring tool with each child using their very own hands.
Trace their hands on a piece of paper and then cut out the tracing, repeat about 5 times. Place the hands in a row on contact paper, cover with another piece of contact paper. Invite children to use their new tool to measure things around the room. |

5 Senses Sensory Bin
Fill your sensory bin with a variety of items that children can explore with their senses. Provide 5 baskets for sorting items by how they explored each object. Here are some ideas for each:
Smell
Cotton balls with essential oil dabbed on them, cinnamon sticks, scratch & sniff paper, slices of fruit, cinnamon sticks, spices, crushed cookies, candy. *Trial size liquid bottles allow for smell to come through the top opening, are see-through and cheap! Another option is to hold onto those empty spice jars, don't rinse out and you have ready made scent jars. |
Taste
Disposable portion cups with lids (at least three and more if desired per student). Samples of items to taste that are sweet, sour, salty, and bitter. (Consider any food allergies when filling these tubs) Examples include candy, snacks, fruits, veggies and liquids from condiments (pickles and etc). |
Healthcare InstrumentsProvide a variety of real instruments that health professionals may use in their practice for children to explore.
Some ideas: stethoscope, tongue depressor, thermometers, gauze/bandages, and an eye chart. Some off the materials may be suited for free exploration, others will require supervised exploration for safety depending on age & development. |
Birthday Sensory Bin
Build a sensory bin using bright colored rice, add in birthday candles including number candles. You can add in cupcake liners and fun utensils. Invite the children to find the numbers for their age and birthdays.

Constructing Potato Heads is fun for fine motor and a fun way to explore body parts.
My Healthy Choices Collage
Provide local grocery ads, scissors, glue and 2 large sheets of paper to each child. Label one paper Healthy Choices and the other Sometimes Choices. Next, encourage your children to cut out their favorite foods. Challenge your children to sort the food into the two categories and glue on the page they think each food item belongs. Encourage your children to talk about what makes one food a healthy choice or a sometimes food.
Body Matching Game
Play this game as a group where you alternate having a child call out a body part and everyone else needs to match it by pointing to that part.
Lace Me Up
Take pictures of each child. Print them on cardstock and laminate. Punch holes around the outside of the photo. Have students pick their favorite color string and attach it to the lacing card. Have them practice lacing with pictures of themselves and their classmates!
Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes
Get children acquainted with their body parts by listening to and acting out Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.
That's Me Game
Lay down different shapes or draw them with chalk outside. Call out a movement, shape, and attribute. For example, "Hop to a square if you have brown hair."
Children will need to identify if they fit the criteria and then use the movement to get to the correct shape.

Give Yourself a Haircut
Support preschoolers in creating a cardboard version of themselves, add plenty of hair using paper, yarn, or other material of choice. Then let your preschoolers get creative while building muscles to design their perfect haircut. A good opportunity to talk about proper scissor use.

She read the children a book, did an activity, and assisted with teaching proper handwashing.

Resources for Mental HealthLearning and engaging with peers that are also learning how to play and engage with one another can bring up big feelings for preschoolers. Take some time this week to talk about self-care and the resources available in your learning environment for calming down. Quiet activities such as drawing materials, sensory bottles, sand timers (also a great visual aid for preschoolers to focus on as they take needed time out of group play), sensory cards and activities like those featured in our Calm Down Binder are all great options!

My Body OutlineSplit children into pairs or small groups. Each group will need a piece of chalk and space on a sidewalk or large piece of paper and markers. Groups will work to draw an outline around the body of each child in the group. After the outline is done invite each child to fill in their outline. They might like to draw in body parts like this child from Building Blocks Family Childcare that drew a heart on their chest. They could also add in facial features, hair, or clothing.

This is a time for children to be able to practice their riding skills with their parents and learn about safety. If your program does not have space for this consider hosting on a community lot such as a school or church (be sure to ask ahead of time). Ask parents to supply bikes and safety equipment, but be prepared with extras if possible. Set up cones for riding paths. Ask a local police or safety officer to attend the event to help teach about safety. Local bike shops may also be willing to help out. |
