Christmas Around the World Set
Are you ready to start exploring Christmas traditions in 9 countries in your preschool program? This 42 pg. set includes everything you'll need to create your own interactive social studies program with your class. This activity has been designed to strengthen young children’s perspectives, understanding, and connections with the world. As you read the included Christmas letters from children around the world your students will also learn how their traditions have been influenced by other cultures.
Inside this digital file you'll find activities for the following 9 countries:
Australia, England, Mexico, Brazil, The Netherlands, Sweden, France, Italy, and Germany
The following resources are provided for each country
- Christmas cards featuring a real image from the country at Christmas time, it's flag, and Christmas greeting
- A letter from a child in each country describing their favorite Christmas traditions
- A cut and paste Christmas traditions activity sheet in color and B&W that corresponds to 4 traditions described in each countries Christmas letter (these images can also be used to create re-usable resources such as magnets, craft stick puppets, or felt pieces to further your literacy enrichment).
Use the included map to track the different countries you have received letters from.
Assembly & Implementation is easy-simply use the double sided print option on your printer to print the letter and card for each county, or place the letter inside the card.
Implementation:
1.Choose a schedule to read a new Christmas card (2x/week, each day for 9 days etc.)
2.Explain to the children you will be “receiving” Christmas cards from all over the world this year.
3.As you “receive” a card-use a globe or map to extend the learning. Before reading the letter, share the name of the country it has arrived from. Using a map locate your home country, and the country the card came from. Draw an imaginary line to the country showing how far the card has traveled (across oceans, landmarks etc.)
4.Read each letter. Take time to: discuss the images/symbols, have the children describe the flag for each country, discuss any similar traditions they have, ask if they know anyone from that country or know anything else unique about that county.
5.Using a sticker, or marker-record the location of the country you received a card from on the provided map.
