Create Your Own Hockey Jersey

Give children blank t-shirt cut outs and variety of craft materials and allow
them to create their very own hockey jersey.

Pipe Cleaner Snowboard

Give each child a large craft stick and several pipe cleaners. Have them create a person with the pipe cleaners. Then decorate their craft stick as desired. When done attach the pipe cleaner person to the craft stick to create their snowboarder. ​

Create a Ice Skating Rink

Lay out a white sheet and place cardboard boxes around it to create an ice skating rink. Children can pretend they are figure skating or playing hockey

Ski Lodge

Set up your dramatic play area like a ski lodge with areas to put coats, hats, boots, skis. Include tables, a hot coco stand and a fake fireplace

Sporting Goods Store

Set up a sporting goods store that sells all kind of winter sports gear. ​

Work together to create winter sports athlete puppets and invite
children to put on puppet shows about each athlete.

Building and Small Word Play Ideas from Pre-K Printable Fun and our Community!

Athlete Towers

Set up a life-size cutout of a winter sports athlete and challenge children to use different materials to make a tower as tall as the athlete. ​

Build a Sled

Leave out various recycled materials and challenge children to make a mini-sled for a stuffed animal. Once children are done with their creations, you can take them out in the snow and test them out or use your ski ramp inside if snow isn't available. ​

Ski Ramps

​Set out pieces of PVC gutter for students to stack onto blocks to create ski ramps to use in small world play.
Add skiing figures, or tape cardboard skis to your figures feet to simulate skis. 
Invite children to make the figures ski down the ramp.
​

Recycled Hockey Stick

Leave out a variety of recyclables, tape and glue and invite children to make a recycled hockey stick. ​

Create a Small World Ice Rink

Provide your students with the materials they'll need to create a small world play ice rink. Provide students with a plastic bin to use as the ice rink, and materials to craft the ice surface such as blue or white craft paper, or aluminum foil. Provide materials to decorate the rink including cotton balls, miniature snowflakes if desired. Provide hockey players, and ice skaters.

Math Ideas from Pre-K Printable Fun and our Community!

Ski Jumping Measurement

Measure the distance of pretend ski jumps. Place a masking tape line on the floor, have each student jump, mark where they land, and measure the distance.

Measure Winter Sports Gear

Bring in winter sports gear (a ski, snowboard, etc). Have your students use blocks or other non-standard units to measure length. ​Invite students and families to bring in any gear, too. This could also be a great opportunity to turn this activity into a charitable donation.

Use a Stopwatch

Use a stopwatch to record speed. Record how fast your student can "speed skate" from one spot to another. Use masking tape to mark your start and finish lines. Try beating your time. ​

Sports and Our Bodies 

After completing one of the gross sports activities, have children put their hands over their hearts to feel how quickly their heart is beating. Talk about how doing activities like sports raising our heart rate and is good for our health. ​

Hockey Puck Friction Test

Freeze water in a container or pan. Have children test a variety of objects out as hockey pucks. Test how well each slides along the ice. Some ideas include: Bottle Cap Pucks, Round Cardboard, Ice Pucks, Paper Pucks, Pom Pom Puck.

Try on Winter Sports Gear

In an open, safe play area, set out various winter sports gear items (e.g., snow boots, ski goggles, mittens, scarves, helmets, ski jackets, snow pants, ice skate). Lay out the various winter sports gear items to explore in the play area, ensuring that they are accessible to the children. Invite the children to explore the gear by touching, feeling, and trying on different items. Encourage them to talk about how each item feels and what it might be used for.

Cross Country Skiing

Place a long line down on the floor using painter's tape. Have students line up and place their hands on the person in front of them. Have them simulate Cross Country Skiing by walking together. They will need to step together by stepping with their right foot and then their left foot, repeating their steps as they "ski" along the line.
