Here are some ideas to help you plan your Post Office/Mail Lesson. It's helpful to put a shout out to your Preschool families prior to starting your "Post Office" week. Ask them to save "junk mail", envelopes, small boxes, mailers, Magazines (anything the kids can deliver).

Make a Stamp Collage
Use decorative scissors to make shapes that resemble stamps and make your own collage.
Packing Materials Collage
Save up those packing materials that are no longer of use to be given a new life as a collage! Bubble wrap and packing peanuts would be a fun collage, children can also make bubble wrap prints.
Shades of Blue Painting Activity
Blue is the color the postal service so encourage preschoolers explore making their own shades of blue by exploring and mixing colors.
Post Office Dramatic Play
Adding a Post office to your Dramatic Play area adds great fun. This can be as simple as adding a few shoe boxes or bins to a table, or as complex as creating some personalized DIY mailboxes for your kiddos. Adding some satchels or fabric grocery bags to the area allows the kids to "deliver" and "pick-up" mail to their friends.

Post Office Truck
Make your own post office truck. Visit your local appliance store for a large box, and allow the children to decorate it to look like a mail truck.
We used a paper plate for a steering wheel, blue paper for the side and a mailbox sign from the bunting in our Post Office Dramatic Play pack for the side. |

Collect junk mail over a period of time leading up to this theme.

Envelope Card Match
Gather old greeting cards, and envelopes. Have your student practice matching each card to it's correct sized envelope. As your clients if they have any to donate.
Shredded Paper Sensory Bin
Create a sensory bin from shredded paper. Add in the colorful stamps from the stamp color matching activity from the Post Office Activity Pack.
As children dig through the paper and find the stamps they can match them up to the correct envelope. |
Conveyor Belt
Watch a video about how conveyor belts work then provide your students with materials to build their own conveyor belt to transport miniature packages.

Package Relay Race*
Set up a relay race where children act out the actions of a postal worker. Fill the boxes with different objects to make some heavy (but safe to lift) and others light to get children talking about weight as well.

Take a Field Trip to the Post Office
Write a letter to someone special and then take a trip to the post office to mail it. If a field trip doesn't work for you ask your mail carrier to come by to pick up the letter.
Children might also enjoy mailing a letter home to themselves and getting it in the mail in a few days. |

Take a Look at Stamps Around the World
Use the internet to research what stamps look like in other countries.
Do this along with the children by bookmarking sites ahead of time or print out some examples for them to look at.

Connect with a Pen Pal
Send a letter to someone who lives in a different state or country than you! Learn about different things they like to do for fun! How are you alike, and how are you different?
Set up Student Mailboxes
If you don't already have them consider setting up student mailboxes all year round. Little mailboxes are a great way for preschoolers to learn to organize their papers. Motivate your preschoolers to check their mailboxes by slipping these themed Positive Student Notes in their boxes.
