There are many reasons why IKEA products are popular among home based childcare providers. They are reasonable priced, versatile, and are appropriately sized for home based childcare use.
This post contains some of my favorite IKEA products for use in daycare spaces. Below you can also find a free copy of my IKEA shopping checklist for childcare providers!
A big thank you to the members from our Daycare Spaces and Ideas FB Community that have shared how they are using IKEA products in their childcare spaces.
The TROFAST line is one of my very favorite collections of furniture for storing toys. The frames are available in a variety of styles that are perfect for small spaces. The units with a flat surface are perfect for table top play, or a cushion (which IKEA sells) to create a cozy bench for reading, or a quite space.
Angie K. hacked her IKEA TROFAST units adding LEGO base plates, and road tracks to their surfaces and spice racks to their sides. What a great way to maximize this unit!
Jennalee B. utilizes several TROFAST units in her construction area!
The FLISAT furniture line is fairly new. This table has two lids that can be removed to reveal two shallow TROFAST bins. They can be used for sensory bins, fine motor activities etc. When you are done with your activity-simply replace the lids.
Careese H. uses the FLISAT table in her science area!
She's combined it with TROFAST storage to make the perfect space for exploration!
Audrey G. combines several FLISAT tables in her space side by side to create a large table. Table top inserts allow for eating, and table top play. Removed, they reveal trofast bins (with lids) that can be used to contain sensory items, or small items such as building toys, or fine motor invitations for play. Combined with the TROFAST unit for bin storage you can easily change the bins in and out of your space.
In the FLISAT line you can also find this low bookshelf. The size of this bookshelf makes it easy to create a reading area in the corner of your living room. I love how It's simple low, front facing design makes it easy for young children to access and put away books.
Natalie O's Flisat bookshelf-perfect for all of the board books!
My guess is IKEA caught on to how popular their BEKVAM Spice racks were for holding books! At 27" this wall mounted FLISAT bookshelf is 12" longer than it's predecessor. This product makes it easy to store front facing books while taking up very little floor space.
This sturdy BUSA play tunnel is so reasonably priced. Play tunnels are great for building large motor skills, and getting some energy out on a rainy day.
Felecia J. combines the BUSA with IKEA mats and other balancing toys.
The DUKTIG play kitchen is the perfect size for a home daycare. With plenty of storage space it can be equipped to hold all of the cooking supplies your budding chef needs (Be sure to check out IKEA's wide range of felt food and pretend play items).
Amanda W. has created the perfect sized dramatic play area with her DUKTIG play kitchen! She has also combined it several other IKEA products. Her addition of coordinating fabrics and peel and stick wall decor make this a comfy welcoming space.
In my opinion he MALA easel is one of the most reasonably priced easels around. This is a quality easel which is lightweight (but sturdy) enough to move around your home-or take outside. It's slim design allows it to lay flat so that it can be easily stored in a closet, or under a bed without much space being taken up.
Darlene G. has incorporated multiple MALA's in her space-including these for an outdoor art area! Be sure to take advantage of IKEA's reasonably priced MALA drawing paper rolls that attach to the bar in the center of the easel.
Darlene G. hacked her MALA by separating the panels and attaching them to the wall to create an Art Space that utilizes very little floor space.
This MALA apron provides all the protection your kids need when it comes to messy play. These are reasonably priced, easy to clean, and put on the children.
Kem M. hangs the Mala aprons on a wall mounted IKEA wire curtain. Mounting items vertically in your space allows you to create additional storage.
It's so hard to find reasonably priced gym mats for indoor gross motor activities.
one isn't to be missed.
These 30x72 1" gym mats make the perfect addition to your space for some indoor fun. They are reasonably priced, and fold easily for storage.
Cynthia F has this wonderful indoor climbing area in her space. She's lined her floor with several PLUSIG mats (and some wonderful natural TROFAST units for storage).
This Vessla storage box is one of my favorite for holding large blocks or play sets. It's clear which allows you to easily see what's inside, is large, and has casters which make it easy to wheel in and out of your space. You can also purchase a lid for it which makes them easy to stack in a storage room.
Many people have magnetic activity boards-you may have seen folks use oil drip pans to create them. This extra large SPONTON magnet board is already to go, and much more reasonably priced.
Do you have a toddler in your care who is working on pushing and pulling? Do they enjoy hauling blocks, and dolls? This MULA is a perfect wagon!
IKEA has you covered for all of serving needs. The KALAS collection includes reasonably priced plates, cups, bowls, and silverware (In coordinating colors if you are looking for that). They are microwave, and dishwasher safe and made from BPA free plastic.
IKEA canopies and tents can be used to define a learning space, or use to create a special quiet area for the children in your care. They offer a variety of different styles to coordinate with your space.
This leaf canopy ties into Jacqui L.'s reading space just perfectly! I love how she also incorporated the IKEA KROKIG as the mouth of the frog in her mural as well!
Chris C. has added a canopy to her dramatic play area. The canopy helps to define this space as well as add a touch of whimsy!
It can be a challenge to stay organized with so many materials. The FLUNS magazine boxes can be used to store construction paper, weekly materials, or books-keeping them organized and ready at hand.
Jennifer B. organizes these to organize her books (On her IKEA Billy bookcases)
If you are looking for a sturdy storage unit that can easily fit in with your home decor the Kallax shouldn't be overlooked. It is available in a variety of color and "cube" options, from 4-20. You can purchase a variety of add-on accessories, such as drawers, doors, wire baskets, and casters to create a mobile unit that can be concealed after you close for the day. Use it's upper cube for storing out of reach items items and the lower bins or open shelves for child accessible toys.
If you have limited space you can utilize this unit to create learning centers. Each bin can be dedicated to a different type of play item such as: Construction, Math Play, Literacy games & activities etc.
It's 6 cube shelf can be display vertically to a wall. or horizontally allowing for a large amount of display space on it's surface. IKEA offers a huge range of storage bins that fit this unit-allowing you to choose the one that blends in with your decor.
Bethany made great use of this space! She has used her kallax units to create individual learning spaces. Mounted horizontally they allow for division-but still provide visual openness in the space.
Cynthia F. has combined a variety of Kallax units, with other IKEA
products to create this inviting art space.
Kristin W.'s choice of natural bins allows the unit to blend in with her home decor.
Julie V. has used a combination of Kallax units in her space. She utilizes open shelving for larger toys, and bins for containing smaller items. She even hacked her unit and transformed some of the cubes into stuffed toy storage using bungee cords!
If you are short on space, you can create mobile learning centers using this cart! The Raskog utility cart can be used to store art supplies, circle time activities, or even diaper changing supplies. Simply roll it away at night!
Heidi B. uses her RASKOG to store her meal time supplies. She has cleverly attached IKEA SUNNERSTA containers to add even more storage to the side of her cart!
Korie W. uses her cart as a mobile science center! She says, "We love our mobile science center...I can keep it away from little guys when not in use and change it up weekly."
Felecia J. uses her cart as a mobile play dough station. She's added labels to make it easy to put away items. It has plenty of room for all of her supplies!
Alina D. uses the RASKOG for self serve and independent meal setting. She says: "It's one of the most used items in our little daycare, a minimalistic space saver, but very efficient -supporting my little friends' life practical skills."
