Are you taking the plunge? Are you considering creating your own theme based curriculum? I'm here to help you some tips... and honestly it's not as scary as it seems!
Your curriculum is your road map, your guide to meeting the developmental needs of the children in your care. Rather than using your money to purchase pre-made lesson plans, you can create your your lesson plans and invest your money into activities, and materials that will enhance your program year after year.
There are many advantages to creating your own curriculum. Creating your own curriculum allows you to tailor it to the children in your care. You can develop curriculum around their interests, abilities, and the topics that are relevant to your area.
Let's get started ..
First, read about Theme based curriculum and how to create your own here.
Now that you are ready to start planning..
A good planner will help you stay organized throughout the year. Find an organizer that allows you to record your activities for the week, as well as track the materials you will need to have on hand. You can PRINT THESE FREE lesson planning pages below. If you are a Pre-K printables club member I have a variety of different planning pages available in the member area.
Let's start planning
Once you've decided on your Themes, it's time to find some activities!
I've done a lot of the work for you! I have over 50 themed lesson planning pages on my site full of fun activities! Browse the lesson planning pages and pick a few that will work the best for you!
You can also find a variety of educational activities on the internet for almost every different theme imaginable. To find an activity simply search the skill you are looking to build (fine motor, gross motor, counting, name recognition, etc.) plus the Theme on the internet. Example: Counting Apples. Pinterest is also an excellent resource to locate educational activities.
Invest your money into quality materials that you can re-use over and over. Books, puzzles, felt stories, and manipulatives are great investments.
You can find materials to align with your themes at yard sales, thrift stores, in buy/sell groups on FB, Lakeshore Learning, Discount School Supply and Amazon.
If you are looking for activities you can print on demand, consider a membership to my Pre-K Printables Club. You will find 100's printable activities that align with Themes. Simply print, assemble and store to re-use for next year!
Organize your materials
Create a home for all of your materials, so that as you find items you have some place to store them. Read about how to organize your Thematic Materials here.
Spread the love..
Once you've created an activity share the love with other childcare providers, and educators. Your success will inspire other's, and help them feel confident creating their own curriculum. If you are looking for a place to share your ideas, join my Free Daycare Spaces and Ideas FB Community!
