Pair this read aloud with a fun 5 Senses sorting activity to strengthen understanding.
Picture
After reading a favorite book about the senses invite your preschoolers to engage in a sorting activity to show what they know!
To use this activity with a small group hang the sorting mat near your group space or place on the floor in the middle. Place the pieces in a small basket, then either pull one card out at a time or invite the students to pull out the cards and sort them on the mat.

My Body Outline

Picture
Split children into pairs or small groups. Each group will need a piece of chalk and space on a sidewalk or large piece of paper and markers. Groups will work to draw an outline around the body of each child in the group. After the outline is done invite each child to fill in their outline. They might like to draw in body parts like this child from Building Blocks Family Childcare that drew a heart on their chest. They could also add in facial features, hair, or clothing.
While children are engaging in this activity and conversation be sure to visit each group and talk about what they are doing.

Fun Songs & Fingerplays

All About Me Poster

Ask families to work with their children to create and All About Me poster.
This can be a large poster or something small. Encourage families to make the poster however they like! They can include family photos, each family can contribute an illustration about the child and/or a favorite memory. Display the posters around the classroom all month, give each child an opportunity to share about their poster. When sharing encourage children to talk about the experience of creating of the poster.

Share a Favorite Book

Consider inviting parents and family members to be guest readers in the classroom!
This can be done all throughout the year to encourage as many guest readers as possible.
Children can ask their parents, grandparents, or older siblings to come in and read their favorite book with the class.

Bike Rodeo

Host a Bike Safety Rodeo!
This is a time for children to be able to practice their riding skills with their parents and learn about safety. If your program does not have space for this consider hosting on a community lot such as a school or church (be sure to ask ahead of time).
Ask parents to supply bikes and safety equipment, but be prepared with extras if possible.
Set up cones for riding paths.
Ask a local police or safety officer to attend the event to help teach about safety. Local bike shops may also be willing to help out.

Healthy Eating

Talk with your children about food choices. Invite your children to cook with you this week!
Offer a few options children can make for snack on their own or with little support. Also invite them to help cook family dinner. This can help them understand why you choose certain dishes for dinner.

My Healthy Choices Collage

Provide local grocery ads, scissors, glue and 2 large sheets of paper to each child. Label one paper Healthy Choices and the other Sometimes Choices. Next, encourage your children to cut out their favorite foods. Challenge your children to sort the food into the two categories and glue on the page they think each food item belongs.
Encourage your children to talk about what makes one food a healthy choice or a sometimes food.

Family Memory Book

Creating resiliency in children is important for their mental health.
One way to help children develop resiliency is by showing them how loved they are by family and sharing special memories with them.
Reach out to family members that have known your children at different stages in their lives from birth to present day. Ask for them to share photographs and special memories that can be added to a book for each child. Encourage family members to write out these memories and communicate them with your children either by phone, in-person, or a video call.
