  • Assorted Construction Vehicles: Choose a variety of toy trucks, diggers, and other construction vehicles.
  • Various Sizes of Magnets: Have a collection of magnets in different sizes and shapes.
  • Magnet Wands (Optional): These can add an extra layer of fun and control.
  • Tape, Glue, Sticky Tack Adhesive, or Other: Use these to attach the magnets to the vehicles.

Let's Get Started!

Magnet Powered Construction Vehicles Tutorial
Start by preparing each construction vehicle. Attach a magnet to each construction vehicle using tape, glue, or sticky tack adhesive. Ensure the magnets are firmly in place so they don’t come off during play- your preschoolers are going to dive right into this!

Give each child a separate magnet or magnet wand. Explain that magnets have two poles: north and south. When opposite poles (north and south) are near each other, they attract, and like poles (north-north or south-south) repel each other.

This explanation is perfect for preschoolers who are just learning about magnets. Let them practice with each side so they can get a feel!

Show your preschoolers how to use their magnet or wand to push or pull the vehicles. By holding the magnet near the vehicle’s magnet with the opposite poles facing each other, they can make the vehicle move without touching it directly.

Encourage them to try different methods to see how the vehicles respond.

For added excitement, set up a fun race by lining up the vehicles. See whose vehicle can reach the finish line first using only magnetic force! For older students, create a small obstacle course using blocks or other toys. Challenge them to navigate their vehicles through the course using their magnets!

Here’s what your preschoolers will learn:
  • Understanding the basic principles of how magnets work, including attraction and repulsion.
  • Figuring out how to maneuver the vehicles using magnets enhances critical thinking skills.
  • Handling the magnets and controlling the vehicles improves hand-eye coordination.
  • Setting up races and obstacle courses fosters imaginative play and creative thinking.

Tips for Success:
  • Ensure that the magnets are not small enough to be swallowed, and supervise young children during the activity.
  • Use different sizes and types of construction vehicles to keep the activity varied and interesting.
  • Adjust the difficulty of the obstacle course based on the age and skill level of the preschoolers.

The Construction Vehicle Magnet Activity is a fantastic way to engage children in a fun and educational project. It combines the excitement of playing with construction vehicles with the intriguing aspects of magnets. Perfect for preschool classrooms or at-home play, this activity is sure to be a hit with kids of all ages. You'll want to add this one to your line-up for a construction themed unit!
